Passage
ESV Romans 8:11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.
13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Outline
Being a Christian is not about being a good person, but the Holy Spirit actively operating in you. This section through Rom. 8:27 is about the role of God the Holy Spirit in sanctification. In these verses, Paul gives us three effects of the Holy Spirit dwelling in the believer:
- Vs. 11 If the Holy Spirit dwells in you, you are now spiritually alive.
- Vs. 12 If the Holy Spirit dwells in you, you are no longer indebted to the flesh.
- Vs. 13 If the Holy Spirit dwells in you, you have the ability to mortify sin.
