Passage
ESV Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?
2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. (Rom. 6:1-4 ESV)
Outline
This is the first of several messages on Christian identify. In light of Romans 5:20, someone might be tempted to ask, “Why not keep sinning so that we receive more grace?” Paul responds by stating this thought shouldn’t even cross our minds, because of who we now are in Christ.
In this passage, Paul gives three truths about Christians and their relationship to sin:
- Vs. 1-2 If you have died to sin, it is impossible to continue living in it
- Vs. 3 All Christians without exception have died to sin
- Vs. 4 Our union with Christ makes it impossible to live in sin
